Barry,

This is something I’ve been thinking a lot about, and stewing about, for awhile now. I call it negative-forward vs. positive-forward language. For example, “Hey you/F*ck you! Why aren’t you doing this?!/You are doing this wrong!” vs. “Here are some helpful ways we can do XYZ.” It is very popular to be aggressive in language and the people on your own side love it. But it alienates the other side. Maybe one doesn’t care about alienating the other side, but it doesn’t help effect change or advance the conversation. I believe that negative-forward language is unproductive & is mostly virtue signaling or adding to the echo chamber. This sort of language is what makes me want to get off of social media all together, but alas, I work in social media…
